2010 has been an arduous year for the North Fort Myers Fire District. The continuing decline in home prices and property values have once again taken its toll on the fire district. In the past three years, our budget has been reduced by 39%.
We have reduced our firefighting staff by twelve firefighters, and have also reduced our prevention staff and other office positions. We have worked very hard with our local union and fire commissioners to still maintain a level of protection that would adequately serve the public.
Unfortunately, with a reduced firefighting staff, we closed our oldest station at 42 Willis Road. We felt that we could keep more units on the road by running out of three stations instead of four. The area served by Station 1 had overlapping coverage from Stations 2 and 3. A very small area will be impacted by longer response times, but we felt it better to be able to send a unit that would take a little bit longer to respond than no unit at all.
At the present time, we have moved our administrative offices to Station 4 at 2900 Trail Dairy Circle.
During the month of October, our employees had the opportunity to participate in breast cancer awareness by purchasing pink fire department shirts and wearing them on duty.
Through professionalism, dedication, integrity and training, the mission of the North Fort Myers Fire Control District is to protect and serve the people who reside or visit the community of North Fort Myers. It is our mission to save lives, preserve property and the environment, and ensure the health and safety of ourselves and the community through emergency response, education, code enforcement and prevention programs.
