NFMFD has trained over 500 CERT volunteers in the past 8 years. The majority of our teams are neighborhood teams, they are tasked with basic preparations and post mitigation during an event of incident. This takes a large burden off of our fire district, as well as Lee County Emergency Management. CERT becomes an integral part of Lee Counties Disaster Plan and will come under the command of the North Geographical Division. Our CERT chapter has had training and been a part of Lee County's Incident Management System during 2 hurricanes.
During Hurricane Charley and Hurricane Wilma that training paid off. Our CERT members manned the Academy of the Arts shelter which housed over 2000 evacuees.
The CERT program gives citizens the opportunity to be trained in disaster preparedness to help provide emergency care to victims also furnishing qualified volunteers that the fire department can depend on in time of great need.
Our CERT teams also managed their home bases by providing shelter, ice and water, emergency services, and completed primary and secondary assessments on their structures. Recovery time has decreased with the assistance of CERT removing debris and property damage assessment.
